While Shaman can fight on their own, they really come out of their shell in group situations. Until recently, the Shaman was not a class available to Alliance players. In return, Paladin was not available to the Horde. Since Alliance members can now access this class more and more people are looking for a way of leveling a Shaman as fast as possible. The only problem with this is that many people over look the skills that are needed for a good and efficient Shaman. What makes a Shaman truly unique is it's ability to not only melee but to cast, as well. Primarily using buffs and area damage spells, players find that the Shaman is a nice blend of fighter and caster. Shaman receive duel wield by level 20 but until then primarily use two handed weapons such as maces or a combination of one handed ax and shield. Shamans can not use swords or polearms. The right weapon and weapon combination is important when grinding. Grinding is what people normally call strategic or long time leveling situations. Many of the weapons come with stats. If you are a low level Shaman, you will want to focus on meleeing for your experience since your mana might not be sufficient enough for any long term fighting. Stats that focus on strength, dexterity, and armor will do well to help in any leveling effort. Like mentioned earlier, buffs are usually the spells being cast by the Shaman. Group buffs, individual buffs, and weapon buffs are the most popular. In a group the Shaman serves as puller along with any class capable of using ranged weapons as well as back up healer. This is important when the primary healer needs to recharge their mana. While fighting and casting is all fine and well, taking damage is also important. Leather is the starting armor of the Shaman. This class can even learn leather working a great and lucrative skill. While Shamans can not wear plate armor, they really do not need to as they are not a 'Tank' class. A tank is usually the one that take the force of the damage and the Shaman just can not handle such damage. While having the right equipment is pretty crucial for building a great Shaman choosing just what type of Shaman you want to be can be just as important. Pay attention to what you want to do with your Shaman. If you want to play Tank then focus on Enhancement. For healing skill put points into Restoration. Then it comes down to it; fighting, fighting, fighting is the best way. Levels one through nine will most likely be spent solo fighting near your starting point. Low level enemies at great numbers while completing the starting quests will yield the most experience points. As you kill, loot, and sell your goods you will earn more gold to go towards better weapons, armor, and bandages. Sometime around level five, Shamans will do well to find "noob" groups. It is still possible for Shamans to act as tanks during these early levels but many Shamans choose to work on casting and Restoration in practice for later levels. Like other classes, Shamans will level up fast at the beginning but you will hit a plateau. This discourages many players but once you get over it you will find that your Shaman is far more powerful then you ever dreamed.
